Gemstone Meanings, Healing Properties and Spiritual Energies 

I am using two primary and well-respected sources for my gemstone meanings. The first is The Book of Stones: Who They Are and What They Teach by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian. This magnificent book was an instant classic when it came out a couple of years ago, including not only dual interpretations of the stones’ meanings, but also wonderful photos and a “keyword” feature that is really helpful for quick reference. It is also written from the perspective of conscious spiritual awakening, which I find deeply inspiring. I highly recommend it. All meanings in my jewelry descriptions are taken from The Book of Stones, and Part One of this section includes an alphabetical listing in full keyword text of the stones I use in my jewelry. 

Part Two of this section includes meanings from the second reference, which I also highly recommend: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals, by Melody (just one name). Her book has been a standard for many years, and I have used it extensively over the years. I have included an alphabetical listing of highlights from her book.

Agate helps balance yin/yang energy, and stabilizes the aura, transforming and eliminating negativity. It increases perceptiveness and assists in loving self-examination toward one's path.

Blue Lace Agate activates the heart, throat, 3rd eye and crown chakras. It can help one reach high spiritual places and is excellent for inner attunement. It holds the energy of flight, air, movement and grace. 
Amazonite is soothing to the nerves and emotions. It brings clarity and helps manifest the pure energy of universal Love. It assists general health maintenance, eliminates negative energy and balances male and female energies.  
Amber transmutes negative energy into positive energy. It helps in manifesting what you desire, stimulates the intellect and opens the crown chakra, enhancing activation of universal Love. It emits a sunny and bright soothing energy.

Amethyst is a "stone of spirituality and contentment," transmuting energies into a higher frequency and assisting personal transformation. It assists in assimilating new ideas; it clears the aura, helps meditation, and bestows stability, strength and peace.  
Ametrine is a naturally-occurring combination of amethyst and citrine, with the spiritual enhancement of amethyst and the clearing properties of citrine. It is said to assist meditation and attunement, dispersing negativity and energizing with pure light energy. It can release negative emotional programming.  
Apatite is related to service and humanitarian pursuits, being attuned to healing, balancing energy and teaching. It can align and balance chakras; it facilitates and stimulates psychic abilities.  
Aquamarine is a "stone of courage." It helps attune to more spiritual levels of awareness, providing emotional and intellectual stability. It emits a gentle, compassionate energy, reducing judgment of others and helping to align the chakras. It can be used to develop psychic awareness.  
Azurite-malachite combines azurite, a "stone of heaven" which awakens psychic abilities, aligns chakras, enhances creativity and assists deep meditation, with malachite, a "stone of transformation" which promotes positive response to change and spiritual evolution. It also represents fidelity in love and friendship. The combination assists in reconstruction during transformation, enhances flexibility and promotes a sense of individuality without ego.

Bloodstone (Heliotrope) is an intense healing stone and a "stone of courage," providing powerful grounding. It assists in harmony, adaptability, revitalization and strength. It helps one progress toward union with the Divine through meditation and love, and it can help access mystical and intuitive insights 
Carnelian provides a strong yet tender energy, reminding us to offer and receive Love. It protects against envy, fear and anger, helps banish sorrow, and awakens inherent talents. Carnelian can be used to cleanse negativity from other stones.  
Chalcedony helps balance the energy of body, mind, emotions and spirit. Through its nurturing energy, it encourages "brotherhood" and symbolizes benevolence and good will. Chalcedony relieves moodiness and melancholy and enhances generosity, responsiveness and receptivity.

Charoite "combines higher spiritual dimensions with unconditional love on the physical plane," opens the heart, transmutes negative energy and may activate psychic abilities. It is a "stone for transformation," assisting with changes. It is a "bestower of good" and assists psychic awareness. Charoite works with all chakras.  
Chrysoprase is a nurturing stone that aligns all chakras and activates the heart chakra. It balances yin-yang energies and instills a state of grace, facilitating deep meditation, compassion and non-judgmental attitudes.  
Citrine transmutes negative energy, clears the aura, balances yin-yang energy, and stimulates radiant energy and a happy disposition. It enhances mental focus, creativity and decisiveness. It is said to attract wealth and to assist physical survival. Stimulates the crown chakra.  
Druzy is the name of a type of clustered micro-crystals often seen in quartz, but which can form in many natural minerals. Druzy carries the energy of life and vitality and "super-charges" the energy of any stone in which it occurs.  
Fluorite helps stability and produces order on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, thus it's known for "bringing order out of chaos." It is also known as a "stone of discernment and aptitude," increasing concentration and facilitating mental achievement. It provides stabilizing energy and capacity to understand relationships.  
Garnet is a "stone of health," balancing energy and providing protection and a calming stable vitality. It enhances creativity and expansiveness in awareness. It is a "stone of commitment" to purpose, to others and to the self and can be used to establish order out of chaos.  
Hematite is known as a "stone for the mind," enhancing mental attunement, original thinking, technical knowledge and memory. It provides a calming and balancing energy and helps transform negativity into the universal light of love. Hematite can facilitate peace, self-control, inner happiness and loving relationships.

Hessonite is a cinnamon-colored garnet which carries the qualities of garnet, and also provides courage for personal endeavors. It assists in connection to the etheric realms, advances meditation, and helps those dedicated to service.

Iolite is known as the "violet stone," and is a major stone for use at the 3rd eye and crown area for healing, guided meditations and astral travel. It helps one change painlessly toward spiritual growth; it can stimulate visions and has often been used in shamanic healing. Iolite balances male/female energies, helps to release discord, and to awaken inner knowledge. It can help eliminate debts and facilitate acceptance of responsibility.  
Jasper is known as the "supreme nurturer." All varieties assist awareness and help one adjust to situations of isolation. In many ancient cultures, it was believed to provide protection and eliminate negativity; to assist in grounding to earth's stabilizing energies; and to provide a sustaining energy during times of crisis. It stabilizes and clears the aura and has been used to assist during astral travel.

In addition, specific varieties have more properties particular to each type of jasper:

Orbicular Jasper contains markings of many small circles. It can be used to support one's activities devoted to service. It assists in accepting responsibility and increasing patience.

Picture Jasper exhibits a hidden message or "picture" from the past. Known as a "stone of proportion and harmony," it stimulates creative visualization and can assist business pursuits. Picture jasper helps bring hidden thoughts and emotions to the surface to be dealt with.  
Red Jasper assists in rectifying unjust circumstances, with a reminder that all choice is one's own responsibility. It assists in remembering dreams and can provide for rescue in dangerous situations.

Kunzite activates the heart chakra and aligns it with the throat chakra and the third eye. It contributes toward loving thought and communication, facilitating self-love, unconditional love and romantic love. Kunzite removes obstacles from one's path and dissolves negativity. It assists in meditation and balances the chakras; it helps one to be open, strong, loving and vibrant.

Kyanite is a powerful but gentle attunement stone that never needs cleaning and can align all chakras. It stimulates psychic awareness, facilitates meditation and fosters heart-felt love and compassion. It brings tranquility and perseverance and dispels anger and frustration.  
Lapis Lazuli is known as a "stone of total awareness." It helps awaken intuition and attune to the creative source, allowing us to progress toward awakening. It also provides protection and organization, and activates the throat and brow chakras.

Labradorite facilitates connection with the ethereal realms, mystic and psychic wisdom and the existence of pure light and love. It clears and protects the aura, encourages clarity of intuition and inner sight and assists with traversing changes. It provides support for self-awareness and self-love.  
Malachite is a "stone of transformation," assisting one through changes, balancing challenging situations and aiding spiritual evolution. It can assist in recognizing and releasing deep emotional causes of illness. Malachite represents fidelity in love and friendship, loyalty and practicality. It helps clear and activate all chakras, especially the heart and throat centers.  
Onyx: An excellent stone for initiating the modes of centering and alignment for the total person of higher powers. It can banish grief, enhance self-control, stimulate wise decision-making and encourage happiness and good fortune.  
Opal, Blue is used to stimulate creativity and communications skills, as well as speaking one's truth and the wisdom to know to whom this may be said. Blue Opal also enhances one's visioning and activates the third eye.

Opal, Pink is a "stone for renewal". It renews the sacred connection between 'self' and 'Spirit'. It teaches love and non-violence and helps one release old patterns. It can cleanse and purify the mind and heart. Aids spiritual awakening as well.  
Pearl (white) symbolizes purity and can provide a channel for spiritual guidance. It also signifies faith, charity and innocence and enhances personal integrity and focus.  
Peridot is a warm energy stone known for healing and protective properties and for aiding in understanding the changes in one's life. It cleanses and stimulates the crown and solar plexus chakras and assists in regulating cycles. It assists in the release of anger or jealousy, thus inspires happiness within the self.

Prehnite is known as a "stone for dreaming and remembering." It enhances protection and expands energy and assists meditation. It can be used to enhance the ability for prophesy and to facilitate contact with spirit guides and other entities.  
Quartz can be used to bring the energy of the stars into the soul. It aligns and harmonizes human energies with the energies of the cosmos. A power stone, quartz promotes harmony. Quartz can assist healing of negativity relating to perspective and judgments. It clears and activates all chakras, with special energy at the heart, brow and crown chakras. 
Rainbow Moonstone is a feminine energy stone, enhancing intuition and introspection and activating the heart chakra and one's openness to Love. It symbolizes new beginnings. It cleanses the chakras and stimulates awareness, confidence, creativity and self-expression, and is known as a talisman of good fortune and protection while traveling.  
Red Coral brings peace within the self and facilitates intuition. It is valued in mystic traditions related to transfer of knowledge of past masters. It brings harmony with the natural forces of the universe and energy to pursue goals.  
Rhodochrosite, a "stone of love and balance," is believed to emit the energy of Love and allows attunement to higher spirituality. It balances chakras and emotions, and also provides healing energy to Mother Earth.  
Rose Quartz: A" stone of gentle love", bringing calmness and powerful yet soft attunement to the spiritual energy of love. Rose quartz works on all chakras to remove negativity, enhances self-love and helps heal emotional issues.

Ruby in Zoisite contains real ruby deposits and is a highly energetic combination that amplifies the energy field of the body and stimulates psychic and mental abilities. It stimulates the crown chakra toward spirituality and encourages nurturing, loving energy as well as health, knowledge and wealth.  
Rutilated Quartz. All quartz amplifies and transmits energy. Clear quartz is used extensively in meditation, spiritual development and healing. Golden rutile strands within quartz intensify the power and bring a connection with the ethereal realms as well as strength with love, ease in transition, spiritual development and calm, reason and order. It repels negative energy and stabilizes relationships and emotional and physical imbalances.

Smokey Quartz transforms and clears negative energy and emotions and removes blocks to spiritual growth. It promotes personal pride and joy in living; it dispels anger, relieves worry and balances yin and yang energies. It is a powerful grounding and protective stone, and assists in meditation. It works with the solar plexus chakra and the chakras in the hands and feet.  
Sugilite is a "love stone for this age" representing the perfection of spiritual love, and bringing "special healing powers to humanity."
